Join us as we explore the rich story of Chenin Blanc, its evolving taste profiles, and its role in shaping wine traditions across generations.

What is Chenin Blanc Wine?

Chenin Blanc is a versatile white wine grape originally from France’s Loire Valley. Known for its naturally high acidity, it serves as the foundation for a wide range of wines, including sparkling varieties and sweet dessert wines. When carefully managed, it produces wines with vibrant, clean flavours, often showcasing notes of apple and pear, along with subtle hints of honey and a nutty character. The specific tasting profile can differ depending on the wine’s style and production methods.

Is Chenin Blanc a Dry Wine?

One of the most captivating aspects of Chenin Blanc wine is its ability to express a broad range of styles. Chenin Blanc can indeed be a dry wine, but it also comes in off-dry, sweet, and even sparkling forms. The style depends largely on winemaking techniques and the grape’s harvest timing.

The Legacy of Chenin Blanc Wine in South Africa

The captivating history of Chenin Blanc traces its origins to the Loire Valley in France, dating back to around 845. Charles le Chauve, in an essay, referred to a “plant d’Anjou,” which he gifted to the Saint-Maur de Glanfeuil Abbey. Unbeknownst to him, this humble vine would rise to prominence, later earning the prestigious name Chenin Blanc, inspired by Mont Chenin in the 15th century.

In 1655, Chenin Blanc made its way to the Cape of Good Hope, brought by Governor Jan van Riebeeck. This vine-cutting was among the first introduced to the region. On 2 February 1659, a pivotal moment occurred when the first wine, crafted from young vines, was pressed. The grapes, known then as steendruif and hanepoot (Muscat d’Alexandrie), are now identified as Chenin Blanc.

The arrival of the French Huguenots in 1688 significantly impacted South Africa’s wine industry. Fleeing persecution after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, these skilled winemakers brought their expertise, greatly enhancing the quality of local wine production.

By the 1950s, Chenin Blanc wine had become a favourite among South African grape growers due to its resistance to disease and wind, along with its ability to produce high yields. Today, South Africa leads the world in Chenin Blanc production, accounting for more than 50% of the global output.

What Does Chenin Blanc Taste Like?

Chenin Blanc’s taste differs depending on the style, with each bottle showcasing a distinct profile shaped by the region’s terroir and the winemaker’s techniques.

Aromatic Notes

Chenin Blanc wine often presents a bouquet of floral aromas, including acacia and honeysuckle, mingled with fruity notes like apple, pear, and stone fruit. In Durbanville, Groot Phesantekraal’s Chenin Blanc embraces these qualities, with subtle hints of minerality that add depth and elegance.

Chenin Blanc Wine On the Palate

A sip of Chenin Blanc wine can take you through a range of flavours:

  • Dry Chenin Blanc: Crisp and refreshing with flavours of green apple, quince, and citrus.
  • Off-Dry or Semi-Sweet Chenin Blanc: Adds hints of tropical fruit, peach, and guava.
  • Sweet Chenin Blanc: Late-harvest grapes create a richer, honeyed profile with notes of ginger and marmalade.

Chenin Blanc vs Chardonnay

While both Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay are beloved white wines, they differ significantly in flavour and versatility:

Flavour Profile:

Chenin Blanc wine is known for its high acidity and floral, fruity notes, with flavours like quince, apple, and pear, often leaning toward tropical tones in warmer climates. Chardonnay, on the other hand, has a rounder profile with flavours that can vary from crisp green apple and citrus in cooler climates to butter, vanilla, and tropical fruits when oak-aged.

Versatility:

Chenin Blanc is remarkably versatile, producing dry, off-dry, sweet, and sparkling wines. Chardonnay also boasts a wide style range, but its character depends largely on the winemaker’s approach, often influenced by malolactic fermentation and oak ageing, which add creamy, buttery notes.

Ideal Pairings with Chenin Blanc Wine:

Chenin Blanc’s acidity makes it an excellent choice for pairing with seafood, poultry, and salads, while Chardonnay’s body and richness suit dishes like lobster, creamy pastas, and roasted chicken.

Chenin Blanc vs Sauvignon Blanc

Another popular white grape, Sauvignon Blanc, is often compared to Chenin Blanc wine due to their shared acidity and refreshing quality. Here’s how they differ:

Flavour Profile:

Sauvignon Blanc typically offers green, grassy notes with hints of lime, green apple, and bell pepper. Chenin Blanc, in contrast, has a broader flavour spectrum that ranges from floral and fruity to rich and honeyed, depending on the style.

Food Pairing:

Both wines pair beautifully with seafood and light dishes, but their unique flavours can be matched to different foods. Chenin Blanc’s tropical fruit notes and acidity make it a great match for lightly spiced dishes, white meats, and creamy sauces, while Sauvignon Blanc’s herbal qualities shine with dishes like goat cheese, asparagus, and fresh salads.

Ageing Potential:

While Sauvignon Blanc is best enjoyed young for its fresh, vibrant character, Chenin Blanc wine can age exceptionally well, developing complex, nutty, and honeyed flavours over time, making it a favourite for collectors.

The difference between Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc is evident in both flavour and versatility, with Groot Phesantekraal’s offering providing a compelling alternative for those seeking layered, aromatic whites.

Food Pairing with Chenin Blanc Wine

Chenin Blanc’s versatility makes it an ideal pairing for a variety of dishes.

  • Dry and Sparkling Chenin Blanc: Pairs well with light appetisers like smoked salmon, goat cheese, or seafood dishes. A sparkling Chenin can also make an excellent Champagne alternative for celebrations.
  • Oaked Chenin Blanc: Complements richer dishes like roast chicken, pork, or creamy pastas, where its acidity balances the flavours beautifully.

Sweet Chenin Blanc: Perfect for dessert pairings with creamy cheeses, fruit tarts, or pastries, enhancing the wine’s honeyed notes.
