Congratulations André, and cheers to a year full of highlights!
Groot Phesantekraal is ending the year on a celebratory note as we toast to the incredible achievements of our owner André Brink, who was named South Africa’s Farmer of the Year 2024 by Agricultural Writers SA (AWSA). This coveted annual award is presented to leaders in agriculture who drive progress and create value through innovation in sustainability and food security.
At the heart of André’s cutting-edge approach to farming is a passion for people and nature. His modest response on accepting the prize at a glittering awards ceremony in Tshwane on 15 November, was: “There’s truly no better (g’n lekkerder) environment than this”.
Since taking over from his father in 1996, André has grown the farm from a modest 350 ha to a thriving 4 650 ha, including leased land. Groot Phesantekraal’s diversified operations now span small grains, livestock, wine production, property development and even a pellet feed factory. It supports 3 500 Dohne Merino ewes, a 400-strong Hereford cattle herd, and 180 ha of wine grapes.
Creating value between the different branches of the business and adapting proactively to change are key principles of André’s management philosophy. His greatest reward however, remains the fact that his children have chosen to follow in his footsteps and continue to build the family business to greater heights. He is also proud of Groot Phesantekraal’s enduring relationships with its employees, who are trusted members of the team and empowered to reach their full potential.
André feels strongly about giving back to the agri-community and sharing his knowledge and experience through various industry platforms. We are proud to announce that he was also named Durbanville Business’ Business Leader of the Year 2024 in recognition of his contribution to the development and economy of the local community.
We’re also incredibly pleased with our young winemaker, Richard Schroeder, for some incredible awards earned for our wines this year. Groot Phesantekraal Marizanne Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2023 has been ranked a five-star wine in the latest Platter’s by Diners Club South African Wine Guide 2025. The same wine was recently featured as Wine of the Week by wine expert Michael Fridjhon on www.winewizard.co.za – a huge honour from one of SA’s most respected wine authorities. Hats off to Richard for crafting such a stellar wine!
Another major highlight of the year was the opening of our new, beautifully reimagined restaurant. New head chef Germaine Esau draws his culinary inspiration from the farm’s rich history which dates all the way back to 1698. He is fascinated by the way people used to eat in those early days, using local and seasonal ingredients prepared simply. The essence of this sustainable philosophy is reflected in the restaurant’s modern heritage menu. The freshest produce is used, with a specific focus on ingredients sourced directly from the farm, including free-range eggs, dairy, meat, honey and olive oil, and when available, figs and quinces. Chef Germaine is also planning on introducing our own hand-milled wheat soon, and cooking with the recently planted pumpkin and makataan.
Filled with goodness and generosity, visitors can expect a generous selection of farm-style breakfast and lunch dishes.
A delicious kids’ menu is also available.
